How to Organise and Style a Dressing Table
If you love a little vanity, you probably cannot do without your dressing table. But if the clutter and the lack of organized storing is a headache, we can help. Do right by your dressing table; don’t neglect it! Here are some tips to organize and style your vanity.
Make it clutter-free and functional
Do a Marie Kondo-if it doesn't invoke joy, it needs a good makeover! If you are one of those people who ends up with skin care products and makeup on the table and don’t know how to make the space functional, the first step would be to remove the clutter. Give the vanity a good wipe to get rid of makeup stains. Even if you have a stylish table, and a tastefully decorated zen place for your skin care and make up (which I would like to call “my own therapy”), it would not feel calm and cozy when in use and welcoming when not in use.
Next, think about storage. If you are tired of using cutlery trays and cupcake stands to keep your makeup, or have simply been stacking them with no clear plan, worry not! There are plenty of options available now. Dressing table organisers like makeup holders, jewellery boxes, trinket trays and even upcycled jars are some great ways to store your things and keep the vanity neat and accessible, even when you are in a hurry. These hidden compartments and organisers for makeup, skin care and jewellery will tidy up the space.

Remember to put away anything that you don’t need on a regular basis – like extra lotions, creams or makeup that you have stocked up for later use. Store them in a drawer to minimize crowding on the table.
Mirror and Lighting
A mirror is a must-have, of course. There are two ways to pick a mirror. Either you choose a dressing table that comes with a mirror, or buy a mirror as a separate piece. The latter gives you the freedom to experiment with the style, size and shape of the mirror. A mirror fixed on a wall, a standing mirror with a frame, a smaller framed mirror placed on the table, a freestanding full-length mirror, or a mirror with shelves – there are so many ways to style your dressing table. An oversized mirror can add glamour to the room, besides bouncing off maximum light around the space. If you are going for a wall-hanging mirror, it should ideally be around two thirds of the size of the furniture it is hanging above. If you don’t have a full-length mirror to check your entire look once you are ready, it is a good idea to invest in one.
Lighting is an area to consider because it is everything when it comes to makeup. Natural lighting plays an important role when you are getting ready. Place your dressing table directly in front of the window or next to it. Alternatively, you can even illuminate your mirror with vanity mirror lights to get your makeup on point. A table lamp, just next to your mirror, is another way to get your dressing table lighting and mood lighting right.
More Organising and Storage Advice
To start with, figure out what your regular use items are – jewellery, makeup, skincare and so on. Group them in categories, such as daily wear earrings, lipsticks, makeup brushes, and remove everything else that should not be displayed on the table.
-
Makeup Storage
Clear organisers are great to display your makeup and keep them tidy. Get clear mini drawers set, rotating stands, lipstick holders, eyeshadow palette and compact organisers, and brush holders to store all your makeup according to categories. Transparent organisers eliminate the hassle of matching them based on their colour, and are easy on the eyes. If you don’t have too many items, you can invest in just one medium-sized clear organising container with sections in which your different items can be placed in categories.
-
Jewellery Storage
Detangling your chain as the clock ticks away? A jewellery stand is your answer here. Hang your necklaces and bracelets, so you can quickly grab one and wear it. However, if you want to protect them for exposure to air and light, get a glass cabinet to lay your jewellery out. This way you can view them easily and not rummage for them. Trinket trays and boxes with soft lining can be used to store earrings and finger rings.
Other jewellery storage options are jewellery drawers, wall-mounted organisers to tack jewellery in, compartmented trays and boxes, stands and jars, and pocket organisers.
Style it up with a Few Accessories
Give your dressing table a unique look by adding chic décor elements like a planter, a table lamp or a scented candle? While choosing these items, be mindful of their sizes. You don’t want to crowd your dressing table. You also don’t want them to be in your way when you pick out your makeup and accessories. Play with their height to make the right impact.
And finally, your dressing table is incomplete without a seat! Choose one that complements the table – it could be a chair, a stool, an ottoman or a pouffe. Make sure the height is right; you should be able to get a good view of yourself in the mirror when you sit on it.
Choosing and organising a beautiful dressing table is no small feat. Remember, organising schemes only work with you, not independently of you.
