As the same suggests, these are the headboards that stand freely without being attached to the bed frame or the wall. It would be tightly fitted between the wall and the bed frame without having to mount them. Usually headboards with storage options belong to this category as they stand on the floor on its own like a cabinet.

These work by being directly mounted to the bedframe.you must always check that the brackets of the headboard are compatible with the bedframe, if not check with the retailer if you can find adapters to ensure the headboard can be mounted on the bed frame. Most of the wooden headboards and metal headboards are fitted in this way.
Wall Mounted headboards
Wall mounted headboards are fitted to the wall where the head of the bed would be. This gives a floating effect to the headboard. Upholstered headboards are apt for wall mounted headboards, so are not so traditional headboards like macrame or tapestry headboards, strapped leather cushions etc. One might also have to choose to go with a wall mounted headboard, if they are opting for a headboard bigger than their bed size.
