How to add Rattan Style to the Decor?

Rattan has proven to be very popular for outdoor and conservatory use for the past few years. The recent trends(read pinterest and instagram) also have shown that Rattan is slowly, but steadily becoming part of interior decor and indoor furniture as well. Here we analyse how you can easily incorporate Rattan into your interior decor game.

What is rattan?

Rattan is produced from a non- timber climbing or non-climbing species of Palm. There are multiple species of palm which are used for rattan production. Some of these climbers can grow approx 200 meters long. These are mostly grown in rainforests of SouthEast Asia like Philippines, Indonesia etc.

The outer peel of the vine is stripped and is called cane and is used as strips. The inner pith is called reed and is used in furniture making.

Why is rattan so popular?

  1. Timeless Style

Introduced as a feature for tropical and hawaiian themed decor, Rattan has moved away from its traditional identity because of its versatility and chic styling ability. It had moved from an outdoor staple to an indoor statement. The versatile rattan furniture and accent pieces have made it easy to incorporate into various decor styles- Scandinavian, boho chic, eclectic, Japandi, mid century and modern home decor.

  2. Natural Modern Look

The earthy color and textured feel makes it suitable for an all natural look. It also provides a laid back, casual feel to your living space which makes the space even more cozy. In its natural colour, it makes a subtle statement in the room and in black colour, it adds drama. It also complements other colors and textures very well.

Also, being a highly pliable material, which can be bent easily during the manufacturing process using steam, resulting in beautiful fluid furniture, taking various shapes.

  3. Light Weight

The rattan furniture or decor accessories are much lighter compared to its counterparts made of wood, metal, marble etc. Even though it is lightweight, it does not affect its durability and functionality.

  4. Environment Friendly

As a non-timber source of material, rattan cultivation/ production is more sustainable compared to the wooden furniture. As the palm vines grow much faster- upto 7 times compared to trees and trees are not disturbed or chopped during the vine collection process.

How to Introduce Rattan Into Your Interior Design Game?

  1. Accent Chairs

Accent chair is an easier way of introducing rattan into your home. Wide back and generous seating is the key feature of rattan accent chairs. You can style these easily, layering it with cozy faux fur throws and patterned cushions. Rattan rocking chairs which have been a staple at grandparent’s houses are also moving into modern homes as statement pieces.

  2. Rattan Back Dining Chairs

Rattan back dining chairs can be paired with most of the dining table styles from the traditional wooden to marble or stone dining table to glass dining table, except may be high gloss dining table. Rattan dining chairs are available in various designs, and with or without armrest.

Classic reed frame and cane woven chairs in contrast colours- natural and white or natural and black are a hit when it comes to rattan dining chairs.

  3. Coffee Table / Side Table

If you are a minimalist at heart, rattan or woven coffee tables and side tables with sinuous curves or linear design would be a perfect place to start our rattan journey. The natural texture of rattan weave coupled with bold and strong reed or wooden frame, you would be updating your living room to the latest yet timeless trend.

  4. Sideboard

Sideboard with strong wooden or budget friendly MDF frame and internals and rattan woven front will help you hide away the clutter, and enjoy its perfect design which would suit a minimalist scandi and eclectic bohemian vibe at the same time.

  5. Bed and Headboard

Another easy way to incorporate rattan into your indoor decor, is to invest in a bed made with rattan or a headboard which is woven with cane/ rattan. This would go very well in a bohemian themed room which is styled with other natural textures like macrames and natural bed linens.

  6. Lighting

Lampshades and table lamps made with rattan/ rattan weave have been popular since Ikea introduced its iconic pendant lights made of natural rattan/bamboo. Similar designs made of rattan were popular in Asia much before it was introduced into the international market by Ikea. Instagram easily picked up on the trend and is still a crowd favorite.

  7. Storage Baskets

Rattan woven baskets and storage containers are not new in the market. These add character to your living space and at the same time helps you store(or hide) various items. Rattan display boxes and vases with intricate design patterns are also available to up your decor game.

Rattan’s indoor journey has been going on for sometime now, but it’s still at its nascent stage. We have only highlighted a few ways to incorporate it into your home, and not just conservatory and garden. There are many other ways for you to include this sustainable, naturally growing and fast growing, easily processed(with little to no chemical involvement) non- timber resource-like in coasters, trays, planters, placemats, underplate, laundry basket, pet bed, Christmas decor, wall art etc.

Hope you enjoy incorporating rattan into your home decor.
