How to Organise Your Jewellery

There is nothing more heartbreaking than losing your jewellery, but misplacing those comes close second. If you have a box overflowing with tangled chains and mismatched earrings, let’s sort it out this holiday season.

Organising jewellery is a serious task, but not tedious. Let us look into the easy ways to ensure your jewellery is accessible to you whenever you want it and is in good shape.

How to organize your Jewellery?

  1. Bring it all together

Stored in various places, rooms- some in the bathroom(which is not the ideal place for your jewelry as the moisture is deadly), it is time to bring it all together. Take a stock of what you have and what you need to throw out(unfortunately there is no point in saving that single earring, no matter how pretty it is- unless you personally love to mismatch styles). This step gives you the opportunity to learn what you might need, and to rediscover the lovely pieces you have forgotten about. Analysing and taking steps to declutter is very important- choosing what to get rid of is as important as choosing what to keep.

Be careful during this step as you do not want to accidentally lose dainty pieces of items. It is ideal to spread a dark colored towel or bedsheet, so you don’t end up losing items.

  2. Categorise

As jewellery comes in all shapes and sizes, it is important to sort them into categories based on the product as well the sizes, at times, based on materials too. As some items are incredibly delicate, can get easily tangled, some materials can cause discoloration on other pieces- this step is crucial.

  3. Repair and polish

Some pieces may not have aged well due to lack of care. You should inspect each piece to see if they have still life left in them. Some might need a good clean. Fine jewellery made of gold, silver and other precious metal can be easily cleaned and mended if damaged. On the other hand, fashion jewellery made of cheaper metals, imitation pearls, charms, beads and other materials can not always be rescued.

  4. Organise

Finally we are here- the step of organising.

The first step here is to find a place to keep your jewellery. There are places to avoid when it comes to storing jewelry. Bathrooms and windows should be avoided as these can damage the jewellery. The humid environment in the bathroom can fasten the oxidation process in jewelry, especially fashion jewelry and can lead to losing its lustre.

Even though displaying jewelry on a window sill might seem like a good idea, sun damage is equally bad for fine and fashion jewelry and can lead to dullness and discoloration. Also, it is like an open invitation for thieves even if it is not fine jewelry. Find a space in the room without direct exposure to sun and consistent low moisture. But do note that certain precious gems need a humid environment so as not to crack- do read manufacturers or jewelers instructions in storing them.

There are multiple ways to store jewellery:

  1. Jewellery Organisers

Jewellery Organisers are a no-brainer solution when it comes to storing jewellery. There are different types of jewellery organisers made for the sole purpose of storing jewelry like

    1. Jewellery box
    2. Stackers or stacker jewelry organiser

Fitted with multiple storage sections, jewellery organisers are a practical solution for most of your jewellery storage needs. Depending on the price, you might find these lined with soft fabric such as velvet and microfiber which ensure longevity to your jewellery and have separate compartments for each item, which makes finding and trying on jewellery on the go an easy task. In addition to the practicality, most of the jewellery organisers - be it the box or stackers- they are stylish and aesthetically pleasing that these can be used as stand alone decorative items. Jewellery organisers are available in various sizes. Clear acrylic organisers are ideal if you only have a few pieces and you are a last minute person. If you are a jewellery-holic like me, stacker is your best mate as you can buy additional ones when you go on adding to your collection.

  2. Ring, necklace holder, trinket trays

The ring holders and necklace holders are practical solutions to those who have a large collection of go to pieces as these ensure each one of it is accessible to you as it is right in front of your eyes.

You can also repurpose your existing household items to use them as ring holders or necklace holders. A normal trinket dish can serve as a ring holder. You can also try your hand at do-it-yourself necklace holders and can be a fun task for you this holiday.

  3. Jewellery Stand

If you prefer to have your jewellery on display on your dressing table or on a chest of drawers, then jewellery stands with multiple hanging options are your best choice. You can also find modern and quirky designs of jewellery stand these days with designated s[aces for necklaces, rings, earrings and bracelets

  4. Travel Jewellery Storage

Adding jewelry to your packing list is an easy way to travel light as you style the same set of outfits in different ways. But it is also easy to lose them while packing and unpacking. Mini jewellery organisers with zips can solve this headache as they keep the items intact and you won't find loose pieces in your luggage. An inexpensive way to travel with jewellery is to put them all in multiple mint tins wrapped in cotton, microfiber, or even a few layers of face tissue.

Hope you have a fruitful time decluttering and organising your jewellery. The steps listed here will ensure that your jewellery is not discoloured, torn, unhinged, or damaged in any way while handling and storing.
