Mirrored Furniture Maintenance Guide

Mirrored furniture is always a popular choice for decorating your home, and rightly so. Whether it’s a mirrored shelf, mirrored walls, or just a beautiful decorative mirror, it adds the much needed glam and shine to your home. It also goes a long way in making your smaller living rooms look bigger, giving them an illusion of more space.

Having said that, maintaining your mirrored furniture does require some time and effort. But if done right and regularly, it’s a breeze and you will be glad to have them. After all, who doesn’t like a little extra sparkle in their lives! Read on for some tips on how best to maintain your mirrored furniture and thank us with a smile each time you see your reflection in them.

  1. Be Regular with Dusting – Dust is the biggest enemy of your mirrored furniture. Set a specific periodicity to clean your mirrored pieces. This way you don’t give enough time for dust to settle in and the cleaning is much easier when done regularly. Weekly is an ideal time frame but choose as per your convenience and need.
  2. Soft Microfiber Cloth – The material you use to clean the mirror is of utmost importance. You want to ensure that you have removed every speck of dust, without damaging the mirror itself. From our experience, micro-fibre cloth works wonderfully – it’s super easy to use, cleans thoroughly and you will be done in no time.
  3. Non-Solvent Cleaners - When it comes to your mirrored furniture, stay away from cleaners that have solvents in them. They may give your mirrors streaks and dull or darken the reflective surface. Non-solvent cleaners are great at making fingerprints and other marks disappear. Most supermarkets have top quality non-solvent cleaners, specifically for mirrors and glass. A simple DIY solution of distilled white vinegar and water works just as well too. Remember to spray your cleaner on the cloth and not directly on the mirror.
  4. Clean Spills Immediately – It’s very important to clean up immediately if you spill anything on your mirrored surface. Especially when it comes to cosmetic items that you typically place on your mirrored dressing table like perfumes, foundation, liquid lipsticks, nail paints and remover, colognes and body lotions. They are made up of chemicals or have alcohol content, which will mar the finish of the mirrored surface if they stay for long. And the effects are irreversible.
  5. Give a Thorough Finish – This is key when it comes to cleaning your mirrored surface. Don’t leave anything for later. Clean the corners, edges and the tiniest nooks and crannies. Work from top to bottom to ensure you have covered every inch. Wiping in tiny circular motions gets the best results. Remember that even the slightest layer of dust doubles because the mirror reflects it. And the longer you leave dust, the more it settles and the harder it is to clean.

And now here are some words of caution on where, what, and how you place your mirrored furniture that will help you maintain them for keeps.

  1. Where You Place - If you have kids or pets in the house, avoid placing mirrored furniture in rooms that are frequently used by them. It will be a safety hazard for kids and pets to place these fragile pieces in family rooms and playrooms. Not to mention the damage to the mirrors themselves.
  2. What You Place - Everyone loves to proudly display their show pieces, personal keepsakes, travel souvenirs, etc. on a beautiful, mirrored shelf. But even a tiny nick or scrape is enough to spoil the look of your mirrored furniture. So, ensure you don’t place any sharp-edged or jagged items on them. Also, watch out for heavy items that may crack the mirror when you place them back down.
  3. How You Place - Be thoughtful about how you place your mirrored shelf, mirrored dressing table or any other piece of mirrored furniture. Don’t place them in high-traffic spots or fit them into smaller areas. Also, avoid walkways and spaces directly next to doors. Not everyone will know there is mirrored furniture close at hand, and one careless bang might be all that it takes to break your favourite mirrored furniture to pieces.

Having said that, mirrored furniture is indeed a joy to behold. Keep them spotlessly clean and let them make an impression. They not just reflect the objects in your home but also your own personality.
