How to Care for Concrete Furniture?

Until a few decades ago, concrete furniture was a rare sight in many British homes. With the arrival of novel moulding and setting techniques, concrete top dining tables and kitchen table tops have gained immense popularity.

It is modern yet timeless, and sturdy, fresh and unique. However, if your favourite piece of concrete furniture must remain unscathed, you will need to care for it well. Here’s how you can look after your concrete furniture, particularly dining tables.

Avoid Stains and Discolouration

Concrete is a highly porous material that is prone to moisture. You may not always be able to prevent accidental spillage of food and drinks. So, are tough stains on your table’s surface inevitable?

Perhaps not! Apply a water-resistant, oil-repellent surface finish to your concrete dining table’s top to protect the surface from stains and discolouration. Clean any spills immediately before they dry out, using a soft, dry cloth. Remember to never use wooden furniture polish or ammonia-based cleaning agents to wipe the stains.

Other Dos and Don’ts

Don’t keep oil or vinegar bottles on the table as the leakage can lead to surface discolouration. Natural juices of citrus fruits and certain vegetables can also cause etching and discolouration of concrete surfaces.

If you have a concrete countertop, avoid chopping lemons and other citrus fruits directly on the concrete surface as the juice can etch through it, leaving permanent blots. Use an appropriate cutting board for slicing and chopping. Also, don’t use blunt kitchen knives directly on the surface as it can damage your concrete countertop as well as the edges of your cutlery.

Choose the Right Cleaning Material

Acid-based stain removers and abrasive cleansers can damage your concrete table tops, leading to corrosion. Instead, you can use laundry stain removers, mild soap or detergent to clean both porous and non-porous concrete table tops. Sprinkle laundry detergent or stain remover on the counter top and leave it on for a few minutes. Then, use a wet cleaning towel or fabric to gently scrub the surface and clean the stain.

Apply a Wax Sealant

Waxing your concrete table top makes it glossy and look neat. Applying wax prevents tough stains from setting in on your table’s surface. Use a wax sealant that is appropriate to your concrete table top.

No Overheating

Avoid placing excessively heated pots, pans or bowls on the concrete surface as it can fade the wax sealant. Use coasters, trivets or heat-resistant table mats to protect the surface underneath.

Handle with Care

There is no doubt that your concrete dining table top is tough. However, it is best to avoid bumps and knocks on your table with hard objects as they can cause the edges to chip. Similarly, don’t scratch the concrete surface with sharp or rough objects. If you need to move your concrete table to another room or outdoor, don’t drag it all the way. Lift and carry the table carefully and place it gently on your preferred spot.

No Pressure-wash

Pressure-washing with a high-pressured power washer can damage your concrete furniture. It is recommended to use a low-pressured washer such as a garden nozzle to clean the surface of the concrete table. A good scrub with some mild detergent and water should be enough.

Use PH Balanced Wipes

There are PH balanced wipes designed specifically for cleaning concrete surfaces. Using a neutral PH cleanser with a mix of warm water can remove hard stains without corroding your concrete table’s surface.

Don’t Place Excessive Weight

Despite its toughness, concrete is not fully immune to fissures and cracks. Use lightweight accessories to decorate your concrete dining table for a special dinner. Don’t put hefty sculptures or planters on them, or move them with heavy objects placed on top. Never keep any heavy cookware on the table top. Instead, use compact serving bowls.

Outdoor Care

Your concrete dining table will certainly be the centrepiece of your barbecue. You may deck it with candles, vases or plant pots, but don’t leave these items on the table for a prolonged time, especially when a heavy downpour is anticipated. If left unattended, rain water may get accumulated below the objects, leaving smudges on your table’s surface. These stains, when mixed with acidic substances, will lead to fading.

When placed outdoors, don’t leave your concrete dining table in a moist area for an extended period of time. It can breed fungal stains that are hard to remove. Use a biodegradable stain remover to clean your outdoor concrete furniture such as dining tables, benches or chairs.

During extreme weather, cover your outdoor concrete furniture properly to avoid surface dampening, or store them indoors. Ensure that your concrete furniture is safe from direct exposure to sunlight and heat, when kept outdoors.

With proper care, the life of your concrete furniture can extend greatly, and it will continue to add rustic charm to your spaces.
