Coffee Table Buying Guide
The one piece of furniture which ties in everything- be it furniture or decor accessories in your living room is a coffee table. We do invest our time in finding the right sofa and seating, paint colour, placement of TV etc, but coffee table can be something that gets overlooked.
Without the right coffee table, the space can look dishevelled, disproportionate and could lack warmth. A coffee table table serves several purposes- from bringing the room decor together, acting as a storage and display unit etc.
Here are the questions to ask and things to consider before finding the perfect coffee table to suit your personality and room style.
1. BudgetCoffee tables are available in a wide price range, starting from £10 to the extravagant ones in the range upwards of £7000. When you are furnishing your living room, the prime importance is for finding the right comfy sofa or seating options for your space. However, if you are willing to spend a bit more than £200, you can find designs which would hit a variety sweet spot giving you the ability to choose from a much wider range of designs.
Do you have toddlers or young kids running around in your household? Glass or mirror finish coffee tables would not be ideal then- be it to avoid unpleasant accidents or finger smudges on the table top.
Would it be nice to have storage space in your coffee table- either to display the curios, the abstract vase or to hide away the TV remotes and other knick knacks.
Is the space for the coffee table also used as a pass through to another area or room? Then avoiding square coffee tables or tables with sharp edges would be smart so as to avoid damaging our shin.
3. Size of the room and existing
Existing furniture plays an important role in picking up the coffee table style. The most important aspect to consider while buying furniture or decorating a room in general is to understand the area and maintain and balance the proportions so the space looks neatly put together and not create a design imbalance. So it becomes important to keep in mind the size of the existing furniture. To illustrate, if your space is narrow and you already have a chaise sectional sofa, a big square coffee table would overwhelm the space, what would most likely suit the space is a rectangular table complementing the long chaise sofa.
So buy a coffee table which would strike the right balance by blending into the room design, rather than stand out.
Size of your sofa also helps you determine the right height for your coffee table. Ideally the height of the coffee table should not be lower than 3-5 cm from the seat height of your sofa or chairs. So please remember to measure your sofa height before browsing for the right coffee table.
4. Lifestyle and decor style
Know your style personality and weigh in the lifestyle while deciding on the coffee table for your living space. If you like to play board games, a square table would be more apt for you. Clashing of design elements is a trend now, for example to counter warm palettes like a plush linen sofa with a cool concrete coffee table.
Where do you intend to use the coffee table? Is it for the formal living room or more casual space? A formal glass top coffee table would not be the ideal choice if you use your coffee table to put your foot up or have little kids running around.
Would you be moving around the table much- be it to make space for a play area for your kid or to pull out the sofa bed? If the answer is yes, investing in a comparatively lighter would be smarter for your back. A concrete or marble table would not be the best answer in such a case.
Once you have decided on the abovementioned pointers, you can easily choose the finish of your coffee table. In reality, a coffee table can be of any material and design, options only limited by our imagination. Aquarium coffee tables, antique door coffee tables, jigsaw coffee tables, chess board tables are to name a few. What matters most is that the design and material suits the decor and your taste.
a. WoodThe one material which has stood the test of time and will continue to do is wood. The versatility and durability of wood is unparalleled.
b. MarbleThe elegance and sophistication of marble tables makes it suitable for a wide range of decor styles. Marble comes not only in white or white and grey combination, you can buy a coffee table in black, green or any other shades, if you are feeling adventurous. Use coasters to keep it scratch free for ages.
c. MetalMetal was used as a frame for the coffee table, but these days, the trend shows the whole metal table - be it in powder coated or hammered finish, making appearance in living rooms.
d. ConcreteClimbing up the popularity ladder, concrete coffee tables are an easy way to introduce modern accents to your home. These are perfect for industrial and boho decor spaces.
e. GlassGlass coffee tables are perfect for small places. Even though low maintenance, glass coffee tables require constant wiping and dusting to keep it pristine as it is prone to collecting (and showing) dust, fingerprints, smudges, watermarks etc. It is better to avoid glass furniture if you have kids in the house to avoid injuries and cut. If you go ahead, please ensure the furniture with glass is safety approved and compliant with BS 7376 and BS 7449. If you have existing glass furniture which has non- safety glass, make it safe for children by applying shatter resistant film.
f. MirrorMirrored coffee tables add glamour and style to the living room with an added feature of adding space to small living spaces by reflecting light all around. This would be perfect for a north facing living room or rooms which get little to no sunlight as it creates a visual spaciousness.
g. AcrylicLook like glass, half the price, more durable, less prone to breaking and shattering an acrylic top coffee table sounds attractive already. But they can scratch easily, so if you buy one avoid any contact with sharp and abrasive items, and easily stain. The transparent look of acrylic coffee tables can make your space seem bigger by not visually cluttering the room.
h. WickerWhy would a wicker table make it into the materials for an indoor coffee table, you may wonder. Wicker woven furniture has been used for both indoor and outdoor purposes. Boho style living rooms could easily transform to dreamscape with the addition of a wicker indoor table be it made of bamboo, rattan, cane or even colourful synthetic rattan.
i. UpholsteredAn upholstered coffee table is one that is partially or fully covered in fabric - popular ones being leather, linen, cotton and velvet. These are child friendly and can act as a comfy foot rest and depending on the frame it can add to the formal or casual feel of your living space. As with any fabric furniture, be careful of the spills and stains.
j. TrunkA vintage trunk would be a stunning accent piece and focal point for your living room and can double up as a coffee table as well as storage. With the right rug and sofa, it can complement a lot of decor styles- traditional, transitional, boho etc.
a. Gloss / High glossA polished surface with multiple layers of paint finished with a reflective surface, gloss/ high gloss tables are synonyms with contemporary spaces. Easy to clean and easy to maintain, this is an easy choice of material for coffee tables.
Dressing up the coffee table
Once you have the right coffee table, it is also important to dress up the table with the right decor accessories. It all comes to playing with proportions and balancing it. You can divide the coffee table top into four quadrants(even if it is round or free form) and dress up 3 quadrants. You can use tall accessories- like an unusual ornament or a vase, set of coffee table books, fresh flowers or foliage, a decorative tray etc to spruce up your coffee table. The key is to use odd numbers, specially 3 while displaying accessories and books.
